Frankfurter Buchmesse is the most important international event for the publishing industry, as well as a key trendsetter for society and a major cultural festival. The platform it provides for business opportunities, networking, education and entertainment for industry professionals and culture fans is exhaustive and unrivalled. Nowhere else would we meet more number of professionals from the media and publishing industry than at Frankfurt Book Fair. Professionals use this opportunity to expand their network and open up new business opportunities, to market their products or hunt for the right suppliers. It’s the biggest gathering of the publishing world, a global melting pot of everything that happens in the industry, a place to be for publishing professionals and literature fans from around the world.

One of the most anticipated publishing industry events of the year, Digital Book World 2019 is just around the corner. This year DBW takes place September 10-12 at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, located in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. DBW is a gathering of publishing communities from across the world where nearly 1000 executives and leaders from trade publishing, scholarly publishing, independent publishing, educational publishing, corporate publishing, and all of the technology companies that serve them, come together to share, learn and network.

DBW is distinct from many other conferences, the event is known for lending different insights on publishing trends every year, and a trendsetter in the industry for the next 6-12 months. It’s a place where you can listen to valuable talks from industry leaders representing organizations which are currently changing the facet of publishing. This year Lisa Lucas, one of publishing’s dynamic young leaders and the executive director of the National Book Foundation, is providing the keynote. DBW is also a place to get first hand information about new products and services, new tools and ecosystems, new revenue streams, new ways of thinking, and a new sense of community.

Some of the big names we will hear from at DBW 2019 are…

National Book Foundation, Audible, Penguin Random House, The US Copyright Office, LSC Communications, Foreword Reviews, Dolly Parton’s, Amazon’s Alexa team, The Motovun Group, The University of Michigan, Mike Shatzkin, BISG, Microsoft, Hachette, Kickstarter, The Fisher Company, The DAISY Consortium, Firebrand, Capstone, Talaera, Simon & Schuster, Southwest Airlines, The House of Anansi Press, Human eSources, Innovation and Tech Today, Scenarex, Orna Ross and ALLi, The Collaborative Knowledge Foundation, Books + Publishing, FutureProof Content, Novel Effect, Vearsa, Readerbound, Earplay, Dosdoce, Klopotek, Simon Fraser University, The Writer, Overdrive, Books International, Macmillan, and many, many more.

The DBW Awards will be distributed at a reception programme on  Tuesday, September 10, after the day’s program concludes. Digital Book World is one rare event where you get to see things differently and you meet really important people. This year we are looking forward to meeting a lot of people and we are excited about it, hope to see you in Nashville very soon…

The evening of the last day of the fair left the audience and the exhibitors in a mild nostalgia, but the memories of the event will linger on for a few weeks, whereas the tempo set by the London Book Fair 2019 will drive the pulse of the global publishing and media for the year that will follow. Reports like Nielsen Book UK’s about the U.K. print market growing 3% in 2018 from the previous year have set a positive tone for the industry. The 48th edition of the fair was a massive international success with over 25,000 people visiting from across 135 countries.

Brexit was looming large over the fair, authors and publishers voiced their concerns and frustrations, but many said the political uncertainty was not affecting business in a major way—at least not yet. However, the uncertainty of Brexit has heightened concerns that U.K. publishers could lose some of their European export market, potentially prompting more agents to seek world English rights deals with American publishers.

For a second year in a row, digital audio was a hot topic at the fair, with a panel of publishers at a standing-room-only session on the fair’s opening morning suggesting that the growth of the format shows no sign of slowing down. “For the past six years, we’ve seen double-digit growth in both dollars and units,” said Michele Cobb, executive director of the U.S. Audio Publishers Association, adding that in 2017, dollar growth for audio outstripped unit growth for the first time.

Caryl Phillips, Seno Gumira Ajidarma of Indonesia, and Holly Bourne were the authors of the day at the fair along with three prominent European authors featured as special guests on Tuesday 12th March: Germany’s Simone Buchholz, Belgium’s Stefan Hertmans and France’s Antoine Laurain. Seno Gumira Ajidarma, the Indonesian Author of the Day, and well known advocate of freedom of publication expressed that the Indonesian people ‘want to know more and this is delivered by books’. The Trailblazer Awards, created to celebrate the next generation of the UK publishing industry; those ‘roaring through their 20s’ were given to the following young writers: Hena Bryan of Bryan House Publishing; Leena Normington of Vintage; Nicola Chang of The Good Literary Agency; Sabby Kaur of Emerald Publishing; and Salma Ibrahim of Literary Natives.

The ever-popular LBF Monday conference, Quantum, took place on 11 March this year. A global conference, with speakers and attendees hailing from over 25 different nations, the programme encompasses the pressing publishing challenges, opportunities, good practice and the state of the global publishing scene. This year the theme was ‘Aligned Creativity: Informed by Insight’.

In one of the speaking seminars at the London Book Fair 2019 Impelsys’ EVP and Head of EMEA/ APAC, Stefan Kendzierskyj spoke on ‘Effective Knowledge Management and Digital Transformation Strategies powered by iPC Scholar’. The talk will highlighted on some key aspects of digital publishing with powerful insights on knowledge management and digital strategy. The seminar was well attended.

London Book Fair 2018

The 2018 edition of the largest gathering of the publishing world, London Book Fair came to conclusion last week. The event being the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content highlights the latest in the industry and sets the tune for the future of it. It also reflects on the importance of literature in society and social changes in the modern world, wherein renowned authors and industry leaders share their views.

The Quantum Conference was a major event in the fair, with this year’s theme ‘Inspiration informed by Data’, the topics included: future trends and tactics; new audiences; discovery; the new creative talent, plus an afternoon focused solely on audio. David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK talked about data, audiobooks, diversity  and the future in publishing, about what consumers are looking for (more than books) and how we can give it to them. He sees an interesting segmentation of market for ebooks wherein certain authors should be published first in ebooks and then in print.

With around 1000 exhibitors from around the world and 25,000 visitors, trading rights, visiting vendors & service providers, there was also plenty to catch up. London Book Fair 2018 consisted of programs on topics ranging from data, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, brexit and what not, a wealth of information and field of immense experience for publishers who wish to keep up with the global trends.

With three Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and  Lithuania being the Market Focus for the fair this year, an author from each of these nations was honored as Author of the (second) Day. Here on this link is a quick questionnaire with the Latvian, Nora Ikstena – besides writing she likes cooking and mushroom hunting. Mikhel Mutt of Estonia has published almost 40 books and has written in almost all genres of literature, except poetry. Participating on a panel on ‘Whether Europe is Sinking’, his answer was that it’s not sinking, but there are problems and we should not camouflage them. On asked about what makes a good story Mikhel Mutt says it should have something to tell about the world, about the right way of living, and not just a story.
